Evolution Takes Legal Action Against Light & Wonder

Evolution is taking legal action against Light & Wonder for allegedly copying their Lightning Roulette game.

Evolution has filed a lawsuit against Light & Wonder (L&W), claiming that L&W has unlawfully used Evolution's trade secrets related to the Lightning Roulette game. On 28 May 2024, a complaint was filed in a Nevada District Court, where the leading company Evolution accused Light & Wonder of using Evolution's confidential Lightning Roulette math files and payout structures for its RouletteX and PowerX games. The documents in question were reportedly obtained during discussions between the two companies, as Evolution had been seeking a partnership with Light & Wonder's subsidiary LNW Gaming to introduce a physical version of the game.

Evolution’s attorneys said:

“This information is proprietary, unique to the Lightning Roulette game, and cannot be readily ascertained through proper means, including by observing the Lightning Roulette features or by playing the game.”

Evolution states that Light & Wonder has infringed on their patents and seeking an injunction to prevent further infringement, damages, and other legal costs.

Evolution’s attorneys added:

“L&W’s conduct has been and is malicious, deliberate, and willful. LNW Gaming induced Evolution into providing L&W with Evolution’s trade secrets for Lightning Roulette under the auspices of entering into a partnership for developing physical Lightning Roulette game tables, but turned around and used those trade secrets to develop its own copycat products knowing that its acts would harm Evolution.”

Evolution claims that Light & Wonder terminated the deal on a physical version of the Lightning Roulette game tables in 2021. Soon after that, L&W released a game called RouletteX, which Evolution thinks is very similar to Lightning Roulette in terms of appearance, features, and functionality. Therefore, Evolution sent a letter in February 2022 asking L&W to stop violating their intellectual property. However, L&W released another game called PowerX, which Evolution's attorneys argued was another infringement on their patent.
